Haughton among winners

FORT DE FRANCE, CANA: JAMAICAN Gregory Haughton and Barbadian Victor Houston led five Caribbean winners at the IAAF permit meeting at the Stade de Dillon on Saturday.

Haughton won the men's 400 metres and Houston captured the 110-metre hurdles, while Jamaicans Kemel Thompson, Merlene Frazer and Lorraine Graham also won.

Haughton, a 1995 world championship bronze medallist, sped to victory in 45.59 seconds, beating Britain's 1997 world championship finalist Jamie Baulch (46.52) and Frenchman Fred Mango (46.53).

Houston, the US Collegiate decathlon champion in 1996, clocked 13.65 seconds to beat Belgium's Sven Pieters (13.76) and the Irishman Peter Coghlan (13.96).

Thompson (49.19) outran teammate Ian Weakley (49.76) in a Jamaican one-two finish in the 400-metre hurdles in which American Torrance Zellner (50.31) was third.

Frazer landed the women's 200 metres in 22.70 ahead of Bahamian Pauline Davis (22.86) and Britain's Kathy Merry (22.91), while Lorraine Graham took the 400 metres in 51.67 seconds. Olabisi Afolabi of Nigeria (52.20) and Canadian Ladonna Antoine (52.65) chased Graham to the finish.

Olympic champion Michael Johnson easily won the men's 200 metres in 20.07 seconds, his best mark of the season so far. Americans Milton Malard and Roshaan Griffin finished second and third in 20.38 and 20.43, respectively.
