Patsy's Flag hard to beat

THE Tewfic Ziadie Memorial Cup, a $230,000 - $210,000 claiming race over 1820 metres for three year olds and upwards headlines today's 11-race card at Caymanas Park.

Eight will face the starter including hot ante-post favourite PATSY'S FLAG to be ridden by top lightweight jockey Robert Reid. Others with sound chances include SIR MOHAN GOPAL, RAJA MAHARAJA, HIGH PROFILE and LABEEB.

A former top-class campaigner, SIR MOHAN GOPAL has been marking time against leading claimers but is now down to a level where he will prove competitive.

Last time out on March 4, the seven-year-old gelding finished ten lengths behind Surface To Air in $310,000 claiming company and now in at $220,000 will be coming at them in the straight.

RAJA MAHARAJA faces claiming company for the first time and does so with a lot in his favour. His last win came over the distance on January 15 under the heavy impost of 57kg. He has been exercising well and with just 52kg to carry today will be up with the leaders from early and could slip the field in the straight.

The Richard Todd-trained HIGH PROFILE is the biggest danger to the favourite. By Wise Emissary - Babydun, HIGH PROFILE has turned over a new leaf since he was claimed last November by Todd on behalf of owner Henry Page.

The six-year-old gelding chalked up three-in-a-row this year including one victory over today's course. In that win on January 26, HIGH PROFILE had the progressive Janoi well behind. He has been kept busy at exercise by Todd and will not go down easily with leading claiming rider Robert Parish in the saddle.

At 49kg and aimed this low it is, however, difficult to oppose PATSY'S FLAG. The American-bred five-year-old mare has performed with distinction at the top of the claiming ladder this year and has not been out of the top four in her past six starts.

On January 29 she was just four lengths behind Chetan going the distance on a $310,000 claiming tag. The winner hit the line in 1.56.4 while PATSY'S FLAG, with 52kg on her back, clocked 1.57.3. Now down to 49kg and at a claiming tag of $215,000 PATSY'S FLAG final rush, in the hands of the bustling Reid, should be too much for HIGH PROFILE and LABEEB.

Other top tips on the card which gets underway at 12.30 p.m. are LADY RUTH in race two, SLEW'S LEGEND in the fourth, SILVER STREAK in race seven, TRAFALGAR in the eighth and STARFROMTHEEAST in the final race.
