How much jewellery is too much?

Fiona Fennell, Contributor

NOT many people stop to ask , "How much jewellery is too much?" Most Jamaicans are only concerned with how expensive it looks and how 'big' it will make them appear. However, there is a point where too much jewellery looks gaudy.

This varies with the time and the event.

School: Girls should wear small knobs or loops. This suits the uniform and the serious image of the institution.

Parties: At some parties, 'anything goes', but for refined tea or pool parties, be modest. Leave the huge grape and gun-studded earrings at home. Try not to wear bangles from your wrists all the way up to your shoulders (you don't have to prove that you can afford them).

Weddings: Do not attempt to upstage the bridal party. An elegant look will be better achieved if you match your jewellery with the outfit.

Funerals: The aim is not to revive the dead! It won't work, no matter how scary your jewellery looks. Funerals have become a grand social event with outrageous fashions. It is okay to wear an extra earring or bracelet, but remember that what you wear should be comfortable so that you won't need head support!
