Invite overseas help to fight crime
THE EDITOR, Madam:
I WOULD like to share some valuable information with other readers to see if, together, citizens can find new strategies to fight crime and violence which has again risen its ugly head in the worst way yet.
During October last year, (crime and violence month) I listened to an interview with a representative of the organisation Committee for Economic Reform for Jamaicans (CERJ) which was created in 1988 and which has been looking at Jamaica's problems since that time. The organisation operates on what is referred to as the 3C's: causes, consequences and cures.
This representative cited lack of confidence in the security forces as a major deterrent to solving crimes.
Recommendations were made as to how citizens could take part by: speaking out, writing about and working together to quell the surge of crime and violence which has taken over the country.
I would like to suggest that a few members of CERJ be invited to Jamaica to speak at a public function or to conduct a workshop at the community level and demonstrate how citizens can work together with the security forces to maintain law and order and to curtail crime. It is still not too late to try.
I am, etc., ROSE DEWAR
