Vaz hunt 10th straight title
VAZ PREP will be going for their 10th straight and their 15th overall title at the 23rd three-day JISA/Mother's All Island Inter-Prep Schools track and field championships which start at the National Stadium this morning at 10:00.
"The preparations are going quite well and we most definitely want to make this very special," said Dexter Bennett, coach of Vaz Prep. "It would be great to win the championships for the 10th straight year because it coincides with the 50th anniversary of the founding of the school."
More than 2,000 athletes from 51 schools will be vying for top honours at the meet. There are three new schools competing this year, Moresham Prep and Waltham Educational Centre from Kingston, Monsignor Colin Bryan Prep (St. Catherine) and Shebian Prep (Portland).
Carlyle Hudson, managing director of Mother's, said his company's continued involvement with the championship was based on the high level of discipline displayed by the young athletes.
He also noted some of the country's outstanding athletes over the past decade had come to the fore through the JSIA-organised meet, including Olympian and World Junior champion for the 100m hurdles, Gillian Russell, who represented Wolmer's Prep.
The meet will commence tomorrow at 10:00, while on Saturday, the last day, the meet will begin at 12:00.
