THE JAMAICA Money Market Brokers (JMMB) and the University of Technology (UTech) are launching the Joan Duncan Chair in Finance and Ethics.Joan Duncan was the founder of JMMB and the chair is being launched in "an effort to fulfil her dream of seeing ethics and transparency in the financial sector".
A release from JMMB said that signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions will take place on the university grounds on June 22, 2000.
The Joan Duncan Chair is an office of the university that will conduct research in the area of finance and ethics. It is the first for the university and will allow both the public and private sectors to use the research data. The university expressed the view that its establishment would be a suitable way to honour the memory of an "incredible Jamaican woman".
Joan Duncan, who started her business after age 50, promoted ethics in the development of Jamaica and the financial sector. It was this belief that led her to the creation of her own company, which was the first money market brokerage house in Jamaica.
Since its inception, JMMB has held to certain guiding principles among them being the belief that love and respect must be shown to staff and clients. JMMB said it also promotes the ideas of truthfulness, openness, and integrity, believes in maintaining standards of excellence and is committed to remaining creative and innovative. The release from JMMB said that while these principles may appear strange for a company involved in the financial sector, they are the ones that Joan Duncan and JMMB stand for. "They are also the principles that the Joan Duncan Chair will help the entire financial sector to maintain," the release said.
