WHAT IS so special about a son?
Paul Green, father of five girls, has tried for years to have a son, and he promised himself that any woman who gave him his wish, would wear his ring.
"I wanted a son because men were born to be leaders, this boy would one day be sitting in my chair, carrying on my name. This child would carry on the work I have started," he said.
Mr. Green said in the event he died and left his estate, his daughters would not be able to handle it. "Women are too frail handling certain things. Men will 'ginnal' (trick) them and take away what they have".
He reasoned that a boy will increase on what he inherits, at the same time making provision for his family. He said boys have more resistance, are stronger physically and mentally.
Premature
Green who has been living with his disappointment for years, recalls a period of brief ecstasy. One of his women had twin boys, prematurely. They died after a few days. "I raised my hands up to the lord and thanked him for blessing me with the boys, and when they died, I was a broken man. I cried bitterly for a long time".
He became so desperate, he felt he was using the wrong position, so he changed his style, "I went four more times, still no boy. However, I love my daughters anyway," he said.
Clifford Findley, father of seven, (six girls) recalls how he celebrated for days after his son was born. He drank and partied wildly.
"It took me four girls to have a son, I was the happiest man on earth, I lifted my hands up to the heavens and jumped with joy," he recalled.
"I said, 'Unto us a son is given, unto us a Prince is born'".
The continuation of the Findley family is the important thing here, a girl cannot keep the family name going as she and her children will take her husband's name.
He wants to pass on his beliefs, style, image and uprightness, he said. He wants his son to follow in his footsteps, and become one of the best contractual plumbers in his hometown.
Having a son makes him feel like an adequate man, not lacking in any area, it also gives him a sense of pride. He was quick to point out that he loves his daughters dearly, too.
A man from the Lord
Trevor Wright, 37 year-old father of 6-month old Andre said, "The feeling was great when I realised that it was a boy". The father of one other child, a daughter, he confessed that he was "more excited" with the birth of his second child. I felt as if I had accomplished something...accomplished my dream in life. In his own words, "I have gotten a man child from the Lord."
Wife, Diana Wright, smiles over his reaction. "Men feel that having a son makes them into a real man," she quipped.
Daughter Andrene, cosseted for 7 years before the birth of her brother, now has serious competition.
