THIRTEEN BRITISH companies will be visiting Jamaica on a trade mission from July 4-7.Safety products for electrical utilities, street lights, toiletries, exporting and examination assessment are among a wide range of products and services which they will promote.
The visit has been organised by the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI) with the backing of British Trade International, the United Kingdom Government's export promotion body, and the British High Commission.
This is the first visit of the Chamber to Jamaica, and it is led by Graeme Marrs MBE and Helen Owen, Mission Leader and Mission Manager respectively, whose wish it is to expose British companies to the opportunities available in the Jamaican market.
Members of the mission will meet with business leaders, members of the private and public sector organisations including JAMPRO, Jamaica Chamber of Commerce and Phillip Paulwell, Minister of Industry, Commerce and Technology, as well as members of the media.
A small delegation will also travel to Montego Bay for visits to and meetings with various companies and organisations including the Free Zone, Caribbean Institute of Technology, In-bond Merchants Association and the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce.
In 1999 the UK exported £92.27 million (approximately $5.59 billion) worth of goods to Jamaica. This represents an increase of £24 million ($1.45 billion) over the previous year, comprising of mainly machinery and transport equipment. Jamaican exports over the same period were £235.5 million ($14.28 billion), with bananas, citrus and sugar accounting for a significant portion of the exports.
