Shaw queries furnishing contract

Audley Shaw

OPPOSITION SPOKES-MAN on Finance, Audley Shaw, has tabled in Parliament a number of questions regarding the controversial contract for furnishing the new building to house the various offices of the Ministry of Finance and Planning.

Recent reports had stated that nearly one year after completion of the $277 million building at Heroes Circle, Kingston, it had remained unfurnished.

Mr. Shaw's questions tabled in the House of Representatives on Tuesday asked:

"(1) Has a contract been awarded for the furnishing of the new building to house the Ministry of Finance?

"If the answer to question 1 is in the affirmative, will the Minister state the following:

"(i) Was the National Contracts Commission involved in the process of recommending and awarding the contract?

"(ii) Was any requirement for locally produced furnishings stipulated?

"(iii) Were competitive tenders invited? If so, state the names of the companies that responded and provide the details of the tender offers made, including the value of the contracts?

"(iv) State the name of the successful company, its principals and the details of the contract, including the value of the contract."
