Shaw wrong on Mandeville road

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I WAS born and raised in Mandeville and am quite familiar with the New Green Road which was mentioned in your lead article of July 19 (The Gleaner Online) by Member of Parliament Audley Shaw.

I remember when the roads and sidewalks in Mandeville were in good condition. I was in Mandeville this past January while the work was being done on the sidewalks and I can tell you they were not in the good condition Mr Shaw says they are. I saw the men and women working on the sidewalk and felt good that something was being done to stem the decay that has been eroding the country's infrastructure for so many years.

I cannot say whether or not the Lift Up Jamaica programme is a rebirth of the old crash programme or if it is a tool for political handouts .

I would hope that as a nation we would have moved away from such detrimental politics, but I do know that in this case Mr. Shaw is wrong.

I am etc.,

ANDREW SMITH
