Motion tabled to debate sugar industry

GOVERNMENT BACKBENCHER Ronald Thwaites Member of Parliament for Central Kingston wants the House of Representatives to debate the profitability of the sugar industry.

The Private Member's Motion tabled in the House on Tuesday, comes amidst current discussions surrounding the viability and future of the industry.

Mr. Thwaites' resolution pointed out that, there is evidence that the average yield from Jamaica's canefields were less than in competing countries, while the Government was making heavy investments in the industry in an unlikely effort to have it returned to profitability by 2004.

"Be It resolved that this Honourable House debate the entire state and condition of the sugar industry with specific consideration to its economy and profitability; and

"Be it further resolved that this Honourable House examine the agronomic state of the industry in respect of the best and highest use of labour, land and capital and solicit consensus on the way forward for the sugar industry".
