Jamaica get past Bahamas

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CANA -

JAMAICA clinched the last semi-final spot in the women's competition at the Caribbean Volleyball Championship (CVC) when they defeated former champions Bahamas in a tough five-setter yesterday.

Jamaica, paced by 19 successful attacks and two aces by outside hitter Georgette Crawford, came from behind to win 12-25, 25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 15-8 at the Sir Garfield Sobers Gymnasium.

Crawford, who was kept in back-court for most of the first set, which the Bahamas easily won, received excellent support from the slimly-built Sheryl Daley who had 11 kills, and substitute middle player Maxine Dunn, who executed three blocks and also had four kills, and an ace.

Apart from this trio, Tracy-Ann Price, Nicola Manning, and Ptamony Hall, contributed at vital stages as Jamaica won the fourth and fifth sets.

For the Bahamas, veteran Jackie Conyers scored 15 kills, had 10 digs, and served one ace, to lead her team's attack.

The 45-year-old Margeret Albury, the oldest player in the tournament, showed her worth with 12 kills and two blocks for the Bahamas.

The only other player to excel for the Bahamas was Kim Johnson, who made 18 successful passes and also came up with 10 digs.

Jamaica will now play champions Barbados in their semi-final tonight, while the Bahamas will play-off with St Lucia for fifth and sixth places.
