THE EDITOR, Madam:
PLEASE ALLOW me space in your paper to relate on an issue which many Jamaicans, including myself, have had bad experiences with, and causes great concern.
From time to time, individuals are being asked to have various documents signed by a Justice of the Peace. It is unfortunate however, that whenever many of them are approached, they display negative attitudes, unwillingness and unconcern for persons who seek their services.
From personal experience, I once attempted to ask a certain Justice of the Peace in Santa Cruz (St. Elizabeth), to sign a document, which was important for registration at the University of Technology. Upon my approach, he completely ignored my humble, "Excuse me Sir", and fled from where he sat, leaving me standing filled with embarrassment.
I am unaware of the conditions under which one is chosen to be a Justice of the Peace. However, whatever they are, one must have known the role, which they are required to play in fulfilling their obligation to the public. I do agree that requests for their signatures may occasionally occur at an inconvenient or impossible time, but this should be expressed in a tactful and courteous manner.
It is extremely important that a Justice of the Peace maintain the attitude that earned him or her that title and also to act in accordance with the title itself Justice of the Peace.
I am, etc.,
ALICIA BROWN
St. Elizabeth
