'Pastor', son get life sentences

THE ST. Thomas woman who along with her son beat her husband with a Bible and a piece of wood to drive out demons were yesterday sentenced to life imprisonment after they pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

They are Nerissa Robinson, 48, businesswoman and self-styled pastor and Owen Robinson, 23.

The facts of the case as outlined in the St. Thomas Circuit Court were that Owen Robinson, 53, had been acting strangely. The two accused took him to the Cornerstone Temple, Yallahs, St. Thomas on April 4 this year where they beat him in an effort to drive out the demons they believed were making him ill. Mr. Robinson died from the injuries he received during the beating.

Robinson's decomposing body was found in the temple days later. A post mortem report said h0e died of internal bleeding due to the wounds inflicted upon him.

It was reported the two accused were performing religious rites, as pillars of salt were found at the temple, while an open Bible and words rebuking the demons were also found inside the temple.

The sentence of life imprisonment means they will each serve about seven years in prison.
