Jamaica maul Canada 129-5

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CANA -

JAMAICA set a new World Youth (U21) netball championship scoring record on Monday night in their 129-5 whipping of Canada at the National Indoor Athletic Centre.

Jamaica finished with a shooting average of 91 per cent and look in great form ahead of their top of the table clash in Pool "A" against Australia late yesterday.

Australia, the defending champions, maintained their 100 per cent record in the tournament with a 69-24 victory over South Africa in the other Pool "A" match.

In Pool "B" results on Monday, group favourites New Zealand beat Wales 79-21, England defeated Singapore 81-20, and Scotland outscored Sri Lanka 58-36.

Top scorer for Jamaica in their win was six foot six Edmarie Lumbsley who netted 54 goals from 59 attempts as a second-half substitute.

Tomika Hall retained her position as Jamaica's top scorer in the tournament with 50 goals from 55 attempts in the first half to take her total to 159 as the Caribbean team scored at a rate of two goals per minute.

Scotland guaranteed themselves a spot in the quarter-finals with their 22-goal victory over Sri Lanka, after finishing third in Pool B. They will face the losers of the Australia/Jamaica Pool "A" match.

The quarter-finals are at the National Indoor Athletic Centre today with Australia, Jamaica, South Africa and Malaysia likely to qualify from Pool A, with New Zealand, England, Scotland and Wales already assured of the places from Pool B.

The semi-finals and final will be at the Cardiff International Arena on July 28 and 29.
