SuperClubs' medal haul at culinary competition

SUPERCLUBS RESORTS swept the field in the recent Independence 2000 Jamaica Cultural Development Commis-sion (JCDC) culinary competition, winning 72 per cent of the overall medals awarded to participating hotels and restaurants, islandwide.

SuperClubs took 79 per cent of the total gold medals, 61 per cent of the silver medals and 57 per cent of the bronze medals ­ with Hedonism II in Negril topping the list with 20 overall medals and neighbouring Grand Lido Negril clinching a top total of eight gold prizes.

SuperClubs won a total of 103 medals, of the 166 JCDC awards given out ­ taking 22 of the 28 gold medals, 35 of the 57 silver and 46 of the 81 bronze prizes won in the contest, held at the Renaissance-Jamaica Grande Resort, Ocho Rios.

Overall, Breezes Runaway Bay placed second behind Hedonism II, with 19 medals; Grand Lido Negril third, with 17; Grand Lido Sans Souci, in Ocho Rios, fourth, with 16; and Hedonism III, Runaway Bay taking 14 medals.

Grand Lido Braco, in Trelawny, one of SuperClubs' three Jamaican five-star prime 'Grand Lido' international destinations, took 10 medals.

In the gold medal category, Hedonism III placed second, behind Grand Lido Negril, with six golds; Grand Lido Sans Souci third, with four and Hedonism II fourth, with two.

SuperClubs' team members took some of the annual competition's major individual awards, as well. Orville Martin, a waiter in Grand Lido Negril's fine-dining French restaurant, Piacere, was voted the Most Outstanding Waiter, and Morris McKenzie, sous chef at Hedonism III, the Chef Of The Show.

Grand Lido Sans Souci's Jing Shi was voted Pastry Chef Of The Show. The resort's waiter supervisor for the Bella Vista restaurant, Kevin Irons, won a scholarship to pursue studies at Hocking College in Ohio, USA.

Hedonism II topped the list for having given the 'Best Performance By (An) Establishment', and Grand Lido Negril produced the overall winning team.
