New public passenger bus service for MoBay

A NEW public passenger bus service was introduced in Montego Bay recently by the Ministry of Transport and Works.

The service represents the first step by the Ministry to institute a streamlined public passenger bus service in the city.

The service started with four 42-seater Mercedes Benz buses operated by Montego Bay Metro, the company which has been operating the school bus service throughout the city for the last three years.

The new service operates between downtown Montego Bay and Salt Marsh in Trelawny, and will carry adults and children.

General Manager of Montego Bay Metro, Fitz McClymot, said the new service would complement the school bus service being offered by his company, when the new school year begins. He said that emphasis would be placed on establishing a proper timetable for the buses to ensure that passengers were able to travel on a timely basis.

Mr. McClymot noted that three of the buses would operate on the designated route, while the other would be kept in reserve for emergencies, or in case of breakdowns. "Once we get this route working successfully, then within a month or two we will be looking towards expanding to other routes," he said.

He noted that with the help of the Transport Authority, a programme was being undertaken to properly mark bus stops and establish bus shelters.
