Women lead the way for Jamaica

JAMAICA's women got off to a fine start but the men faltered on the opening day of the four-day Caribbean Amateur Golf Championship (CAGC) at the Royal Westmoreland Golf Club in Bridgetown, Barbados.

Former Caribbean champion Jodi Munn shot a six-over 78 and her score was complemented by national champion Maggie Lyn's 81 to give Jamaica a share of the lead with the hosts on 159 in the George Teale Trophy section. The Bahamas were six further strokes back in third.

The Hoerman Cup team struggled and is ten shots off the pace set by favourites Puerto Rico. Jamaica ended the day with a score of 303 (Phillip Prendergast 74, Johnny Bloomfield 75, Jason Lopez 76 and Mike Gleichman 78). The day's best rounds belonged to the Puerto Rican pair of Mauricio Nunez and Ernie Villabos who carded three-under 69s.

Trinidad and Tobago and the Organisation of East Caribbean States (OECS) are tied for second on 297.

Jamaica are near the foot of the standings in the two men's senior categories.

In the Seniors' Francis and Steele Perkins competition Jamaica are eighth with a score of 166; 16 strokes behind leaders Trinidad and Tobago. In the SuperSeniors Higgs and Higgs Trophy, Ossie Lee and Fred Sutherland combined for a Two Ball Better Ball score of 80 which also put them in eighth place in that section.
