Reading programme a hit

FOLLOWING AN evaluation of the St. Thomas Parish Library's annual summer programme which ended August 4, the organisers are counting it a success.

Senior Librarian, Maureen Thompson, says the programme, established under the theme 'Readers are achievers,' was aimed at encouraging children to read more and enjoy doing it.

The participants were given talks on reading and writing skills; did reading in groups on a competitive basis; reading of patois; debates in reading; along with complementary programmes of concerts, dances, field trips, and plays depicting the parish's historical legacy.

Winners in the various age categories in the programme's reading competition will represent St. Thomas at the National finals slated for August 22, to be televised by TVJ.

The winners were Abigail Morris in the 6-8 category, Sherine Thomas, 9-11, Stephanie Davis in the age 12-14 age group.

Miss Thompson said that having evaluated the programme, next year the focus would be on specific reading or writing problems that are identified.

"We also introduce them to other social activities which affect their lives such as etiquette, environmental awareness, conflict resolution and their over interaction with peers," she said.

Some children to whom The Gleaner spoke were delighted about the programme.

Abigail Morris said: "It was interesting, we got the chance to play, watch TV, sing and I also enjoyed the game."

For Stephanie Davis, "It is interesting for students as it enhances their education, and give them a chance to learn about the communities in which they live."

Sherine Thomas added: "I think the summer programme was fun and educational; but most of all I enjoyed the trips which showed much of Jamaica."
