CAPE to offer full range

STUDENTS WILL be able to take examinations in the full range of subjects being offered in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE), by 2003, the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) has announced.

The latest addition to those subjects already being taken is Communication Studies, one of the six core courses in CAPE. Examinations in the subject which was introduced in 1998, were offered for the first time in May 2000, along with 18 other subjects.

It focuses specifically on the development of competencies in Standard English, and CXC said it was seeking to address concerns about the language skills of school graduates through the Communication Studies syllabus for CAPE.

Also, it involves teaching students types of speaking, writing, study and summary skills as well as how to make a comparative analysis between Creole and English. Technology, culture and communication are components also.

Other subjects in the pipeline include Art and Design, Computer Science, Economics, Geo-metrical and Mechanical Engineering Drawing and Management of Business. Exam-inations in these will be offered from May 2001, CXC said.
