THE EDITOR, Madam:
IT IS sad and shameful when a public official is so insensitive that something which should be regarded as a public trust can be claimed as personal property. Shame on Mr. Peralto and his supporters for this crass and vulgar self-exaltation. Where is 'in service to our fellow citizens?'
Which brings me to the real issue of the kinds of leaders we have elected in this country to represent us over the years. Some of our leaders now in authority do not know the Anthem or the Pledge, and what they really represent in letter or in spirit. Little wonder we are in this mess.
We have instead elected leaders who have demonstrated, as the Bible says: "[Their] wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish." Producing envying and strife where "there is confusion and every evil work." (James 3:15-16)
It is time to restore the foundation of our nation by excavating the treasures of visionary leadership hidden in our Anthem, Pledge and Motto. So far, it is our extreme ignorance of this unshakeable foundation which has brought inestimable destruction to our nation.
We can still give to our future generations, the gift of a Jamaica whose national personage has not been so devalued as to bring shame, but one which has experienced an "increase in beauty, fellowship and prosperity," if we seize this moment.
