The importance of family, parental guidance

Tka Pinnock, Youth Writer

IF WE did not need parents I believe God would have found another way to get us here. No matter what dumb reasons we come up with for not needing parents, the truth is they are necessary.

Parents are our special tour guides through life's theme park. They are the ones who teach us how to play the game of life to win and how to face temporary defeat. They are the masters of "been there, done that". They know all the pitfalls and all the lessons in the book. They have faced the test of time and are ready to help us do the same.

Some parents however, have failed the test. As a result their children are forced to learn the hard lessons by themselves or rely on family members.

As a teenager I absolutely understand why we sometimes have no regards for our parents' or family members' guidance. It can be overbearing and we want to make our own decisions without their input and live our own lives.

And when its time to face the consequences, we expect them to support us wholeheartedly.

We all know our family's guidance is important. It's the very thing that keeps us from doing a fair amount of damage to other people and ourselves. Without guidance all of us would be living a life of regret. Even though we disregard the guidance that we got and continue making foolish decisions, it is that same guidance that yells in our ears "that was so stupid" and keeps us in check. For the children of today to become sane, rational people of tomorrow, they need guidance. Parents sometimes forget that. I implore all the parents to guide their children because we have no clue about what we are doing or how to do it. We cannot learn to make our decisions unless you teach us how. And if you do not know, then having a child was a bad decision.
