Being a part of the 'in crowd'

Stephanie Wynter, Youth Writer

WHAT IS the 'in crowd'? It is a group of popular teenagers who hang together for fun. The 'in crowd' is considered a special group, for a special people. Everyone in high school wants to be a part of it. Some may deny it out loud, but secretly, they all want to be involved. Every teenager at some point in their life wants to be admired, respected, loved and even envied.

The 'in crowd' has certain standards and images that have to be maintained, If you want to be a part of the crowd, certain sacrifices have to be made.

There is of course the criteria that has to be met before one can be admitted in. This involves a certain way of dressing, walking and even talking. It is cool to be cool, to be popular, to be in fashion, to be admired. You can intmi-date, bully , tease and snap commands at other people dumb enough to be afraid.

Then there is unmerciful torturing, unkind rumours and damaging people's reputation.

As individuals we need to have our own identity, to be known for who we are, not as a member of the 'incrowd' but as individuals. It is rare that in crowds rally behind their members, it is like polite society, just say or do the wrong thing once and you are out.

I firmly believe that there are much better things to do with one's time than adhere to the ill-conceived notions of society. Okay, I agree that we must have rules in order to control the country. But rather like the society, the 'in crowd' has conventions, and sacrifices have to be made and I firmly believe that 'in crowds' and societies must be done away with in order to delete class and colour prejudice and so make the world a most agreeable place to live.
