Ja through to semi-finals

GEORGETOWN, CANA -

JAMAICA knocked defending champions Barbados out of the 2000 West Indies Under-19 cricket tournament by forcing a draw in their final preliminary round match at Bourda yesterday.

In the semi-finals which start tomorrow, Jamaica will face Guyana and the Windward Islands meet Trinidad and Tobago at Uitvlugt.

Needing an outright victory to book their place in the final four, the Barbadians declared their second innings closed at 155 for eight - setting the Jamaicans 205 in a minimum 57 overs for victory. The Jamaicans reached 142 for one at the close of play.

Final scores: Barbados 249 and 155 for eight declared ; Jamaica 200 and 142 for one.

Resuming at the overnight 17 for one, Barbados lost wickets at regular intervals as they sought quick runs to set Jamaica a decent victory target.

It was obvious from the start the Jamaicans weren't going to assist them however, with pacers Andrew Richardson and Jermaine Lawson being the only bowlers employed throughout the Bajans' second innings. As a result only 23 overs were bowled in the pre-lunch session with Barbados adding 89 while losing five wickets.

The batsmen out were - Dwayne Smith who moved from his overnight six to 15 before being caught and bowled by Richardson; Rohan Nurse run out for 16; Vonrick Nurse caught by Phillip Keating off Richardson for 18; Patrick Browne yorked by Jermaine Lawson for two; and Marlon Clarke, run out on the stroke of lunch for 28.

Although losing Mwangi Broomes (0), caught by wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh off Richardson; and Ryan Austin (7), leg before to the same bowler, the Barbados innings received much needed impetus in the form of Ryan Nurse who hit an unbeaten 31 from 30 deliveries, with three boundaries. Anderson Sealy also provided a late flourish, hitting three fours from eight balls to be unbeaten on 14.

Richardson ended with figures of four for 54 while Lawson proved to be expensive, conceding four for 54 from 18 overs.

AT ENMORE: Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago, already assured of semi-final places, played to a tame draw in their top-of-the-table Zone A encounter.

Final scores were: Trinidad and Tobago 223 and 231; Guyana 176.

AT UITVLUGT: Leewards' captain, Chaka Hodge, captured five wickets as his team crushed Canada by an innings and 140 runs.

Hodge, bowling offspin, claimed five for 24 from 18 overs as Canada, resuming at their overnight score of 104 for two, were dismissed 13 minutes before lunch for 140.

Final scores were: Canada 69 and 140, Leewards 349 for two declared.
