Bounty shares spotlight at Beenie's birthday bash

Beenie Man blows out the candles on his birthday cake while his companion Carlene and friends look on.

CALL IT the reunification if you want, call it mutiny on the music industry by the two dancehall kings, but Beenie Man and Bounty Killer sent shock waves through the crowd of thousands who turned out to celebrate Beenie Man's birthday at Montego Bay's newest showpiece, Caribbean Showplace Tuesday night.

Bounty Killer's fans jumped to Beenie Man's lyrics and Beenie fans pranced to Bounty's antics.

The 'Doc' brought his lone female 'nurse', Lady Saw and several dancehall 'musical surgeons' who were ready to see to the needs of the many female fans in the audience.

The likes of Tanto Metro and Devonte, Snagga Puss, Captain Barkey and Wickerman, Squiddly Ranks, Nittie Kutchie and Mr. Lex to name a few, journeyed 119 miles one-way from Kingston to join in the celebration.

Two days of advertising was all the promoters needed and the venue was jam packed. With tickets sold out by midnight, the gates had to be closed soon after, leaving hundreds of irate patrons outside the gate.

"Whenever I come MoBay is excess amount a love I get", said Beenie Man.

About 4,000 patrons fitted into the club capable of holding a maximum of 2,000.

The show which started at 2:00 a.m., opened to a lot of vibes set off by the first acts Nesbeth and Escobar. They were followed by Black Lion and Tomorrow, Mankind, Bling Dog, Mr. Lex.

One hour later, it was 'Star Time' with Snagga Puss leading off with such hilarious dance moves as Hottie Hottie and Body Basics.

Squiddly Ranks' appearance encouraged the flicker of lighters, especially when he did a hilarious performance with Kid Ralph of a love letter to Ninja Man.

When Lady Saw entered the stage, the women screamed and the men howled. She was followed by Captain Barkey and Wickerman, who performed Sodom and Gomorrah, which hit out at homosexuals. Barkey walked out looking still shaken from an incident in Kingston, where he was robbed of his gold chain.

At dawn, Beenie Man and Bounty Killer came on stage 'dressed to kill' in black and gold respectively. The two gave a startling performance, with the two trading showmanship for showmanship, at no time shortchanging their fans.

Their appearance will be remembered in the tourist resort for many years to come as one of the most outstanding.
