Government aware of concerns - Mullings

DEPUTY PRIME Minister Seymour Mullings who is in charge of the government, while Prime Minister Patterson is overseas on vacation, yesterday acknowledged increasing public concern about the level of crime.

In a direct response to Peter Moses, president of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ), Mr. Mullings said the political directorate was not only aware of the concerns of the citizens and business community, but itself "was seized with the far-reaching negative effects of the unacceptable high levels of crime and violence on both the economy and on the quality of life of all Jamaicans".

Mr. Moses, had, in an open letter to Mr. Patterson, pointed to the crime situation which he said had reached unprecedented levels. "Our society is under siege and each day is lived in a state of fear and anxiety," Mr. Moses said.

He added that the business community had lost confidence in the persons responsible for stemming this wanton wave of crime and violence which continues to wreak havoc in our society on a daily basis".

Mr. Gordon 'Butch' Stewart on Tuesday called on the Government to fix the problem or demit office, thus making space for "somebody who can".
