Carib District of Optimist convenes
THE CARIBBEAN District of Optimist International will, this weekend, stage its Fourth Quarter District Convention for the administrative year 1999-2000, at the Renaissance Jamaica Grande Hotel in Ocho Rios, St. Ann. This conference will culminate activities being celebrated this week to mark the 20th Anniversary of Optimism in the Caribbean, and will be attended by Optimists from Jamaica, Antigua & Barbuda, Anguilla, Barbados, Dominica, Grenada, Tortola, Trinidad & Tobago, and The Turks & Caicos Island. Special guests for this conference will be Optimist International President, Andre Dubois, and his wife Lise, from Quebec, Canada, International vice-president, Theodore Golding, from Jamaica and international field representative, Jeff Weinstien, and his wife Marilyn from Florida, USA. Activities will begin tomorrow evening with The Governor's Reception at Fishermen's Point Resort in Ocho Rios. On Saturday, there will be special training workshops on team building, creative problem solving and future leaders training. This will be followed by the first general session, the election of the District Governor for 2001-2002 and the Board of Directors meeting. On Sunday, the usual Thanksgiving Service will be held followed by the second general session. The highlight of this Caribbean District Convention will be the 20th Anniversary Banquet and Ball on Saturday, at The Renaissance Jamaica Grande Hotel. District officers for 2000-2001 will also be installed at this function. Optimist International is one of the world's largest service club organisations, with more than 130,000 members in over 4,200 Optimist Clubs world-wide, and started in Jamaica on August 10, 1980 with the formation of The Optimist Club of Kingston.
