Athletes in high gear for Sydney
JAMAICA'S preparation for the Sydney Olympics moves into high gear this weekend.Twenty-four members of the track and field contingent, including 12 athletes, will leave the island tomorrow for a 16-day pre-Olympic camp in Brisbane, Australia. The camp begins on Sunday and will continue until September 11. Winston Ulett, manager of the track and field squad, will head the contingent. He will be accompanied by team doctor Aggrey Irons, physiotherapists Marcia Swire-Forbes and Dr. Glenton Smith, assistant managers Lincoln Eatmon and Marie Tavares, head coach Glen Mills and assistant coaches Raymond Graham, Fitz Coleman, Michael Clarke, Stephen Francis and Dennis Johnson. The 12 athletes are Olivia McKoy, Michelle Burgher, Veronica Campbell, Karen Beautle, Brandon Simpson, Sanjay Ayre, Omar Brown, Lindel Frater, Michael McDonald, Dwight Thomas, Marvin Watt and Chris Williams. Simpson who was originally left off the official JOA team list announced on July 25 has been reinstated and travels with the team as a member of the 4x400 metres squad. The group will be joined in Los Angeles by United States-based athletes Claxton Bernard, Michael Blackwood, Llewelyn Bredwood, Davian Clarke, Robert Foster, Patrick Jarrett, Danny McFarlane, Ian Weakley, Patrina Allen, Celena Clarke, Peta-Gaye Dowdie, Lacena Golding, Elva Goulbourne, Charmaine Howell, Keisha Spencer, Andrea Thomas and Astia Walker. Olympic 400 metres hurdles champion Deon Hemmings, double silver medallist Merlene Ottey, Michelle Freeman, Beverly McDonald, Delloreen Ennis-London and Tayna Lawrence are running on the Grand Prix circuit in Europe and will join the Jamaica squad in Australia. Sailors Andrew Gooding and Sean Nunes are already in Australia, swimmers Janelle Atkinson and Angella Chuck will arrive there on September 7 while triathlete Iona Wynter flies into Sydney on September 9.
