Beenie's Birthday Party
DESPITE the fact that it was his birthday, it was Beenie Man - along with some of his friends from the dancehall culture who gave the presents - stinging dancehall lyrics. Beenie Man's awesome birthday party was staged at the Caribbean Show Place, in Montego Bay, on Tuesday Night. Taking the stage at 4:00 a.m., in the aftermath of well received performances from the electrifying Mr Lex, an unrepentant Lady Saw, the hilarious Captain Barkey and Wickerman and others, the charismatic Beenie Man promptly invited Bounty Killer to join him on stage. While Beenie Man, nattily attired in full black, was in a mellow mood and for the most part seemed quite content in just trading lyrics with his former rival, Bounti Killer was in a militant mood, taking out his wrath on fellow dancehall star Sizzla. "De bwoy Sizzla is a big #@$ ," said a seemingly enraged Bounty Killer. Killer is contending that Sizzla is questioning his lyrics about rastas in the song, Can't Believe Mi Eyes and behaving as if he was more rasta than everyone else. "Me no waa war him (Sizzla) because me nuh have no time fi go war no #$%#." In a friendly lyrical showdown, Beenie Man and Bounty Killer traded lyrics for over an hour, lifting the screaming patrons into a stage of musical ecstasy with their sizzling combinations and counteractions. Songs such as, Riding West, Eagle and the Hawk, Fire Burn and Tell Me.While not as forceful as Bounty, Beenie Man, who recently began referring to himself as Ras Moses, had his say about the 'bobos'. He appealed to them to leave him alone. "Me no trouble nobody, me just a try to move mi career to another level."In between declaring themselves as, 'de real big men inna dancehall music', Bounty Killer and Beenie Man briefly shared the stage with dancehall personality 'Bubbler', who presented Beenie Man with a gift; and Beenie Man's dancer, Kitty Paw, who showed off his dancing skills. Lady Saw, whose presence caused much excitement, was in a playful mood. She poked fun at those who were making a fuss over her Reggae Sumfest performance. "Mek a tell you what dem never like about the performance," she said before reeling off the songs, Straight Wuk and Back Shot. Following Lady Saw's short but well received set, lyrics flowed freely as Captain Barkey and Wickerman, Nitty Kutchie, Tonto Metro, Devonte and Silver Cat all combined forces in keeping the crowd, one of the largest in an enclosed venue in Montego Bay, screaming and dancing. The early fans got an unforgettable treat from Lexxus, who had to leave early to catch a flight. Showing off his lyrical prowess and charisma, he left no doubt that he was a big crowd favourite, as he had fans going wild with songs such as, Cook, Full Hundred and A Penni Wi.The event had an expensive appearance all the way through ranging from the elegant dressing of the entertainers and fans, the hundreds of expensive cars that lined the streets of the Iron Shore suburbs and the expensive champagne that flowed freely all night.
