NIS benefits and transparency

THE EDITOR, Madam:

IN THE Gleaner of July 17 the Ministry of Labour and Social Security had an advertisement stating that persons who had reached the retirement age of 60 years in 1966 when the NIS Scheme commenced and therefore did not contribute will now be eligible for a special NIS Pension. Such persons will now be 94 years old, and will not live much longer, but they must be grateful to the Minister for his help.

Due to the usual lack of transparency we do not know how the special pension will be calculated. It is to be hoped that this will be done, at the very least, on the basis of persons who entered their 94th year on January 1, 2000 receiving the weighted average sum of present payments being made to normal NIS pensioners.

I am, etc.,
