Letter of the Day - Reducing Kingston's traffic congestion

THE EDITOR, Madam:

WHILST I congratulate the Government, moreso the Ministry of Transport and Works, for the effort being made to help solve the problem of traffic congestion in the island, I would like to point out some areas that demand urgent if not immediate attention and to make some recommendations:

1. On our roadways round-abouts have now become obsolete. They only add to the traffic congestion and make for more indiscipline on our roads. The alternative is to introduce fly-overs at more of these intersections.

2. Block-off some of the minor roads that lead onto the highway e.g. along the Spanish Town by-pass.

3. Create more filter lanes that will allow for motorists to merge with other traffic without being a hindrance to other motorists.

Areas that need immediate attention are; Half-Way Tree Square, intersection of Hagley Park Rd and Maxfield Ave, the Three Miles Round-about, the intersections of Marcus Garvey Drive and the Causeway Main Rd., Ferry Main Rd. and Caymanas Crossing and the round-about at Twickenham Park.

Recently, I was privileged to travel on one of our new buses. I observed a few things. I noticed a sign in the bus which reads: 'No Smoking. No eating inside'. Whilst at Parade (Downtown) I noticed no one was smoking whilst in the bus, on the other hand it would seem that actually everyone had a right to eat in them. I hope this is not a sign of regression.

Secondly, there seems to be a bit of confusion concerning the fare stages and lastly, Mr. Minister when can we expect to see bus sheds placed at North and South Parade? When it rains downtown commuters are inconvenienced greatly.

I am, etc.,
