On abolishing concessions

THE EDITOR, Madam:

LET ME get this right. In order to curtail fraud under the 20 per cent concession scheme the government is thinking of totally abolishing the scheme. This is the laziest solution to a problem I have ever heard!

My mother has been a teacher for 32 years, from the primary level all the way to university. We have never had a lot of money but one of the few 'perks' of being a teacher is the concession scheme. She managed to buy a car six years ago and is trying to get a newer (still used) car and by the time she gets the necessary funds the scheme might be gone. That's thanks for 32 years, isn't it?

Is it so hard to investigate someone who plans to by a Prado or Pajero using 20 per cent concession to find out if their claim is legitimate or not? Simple investigation would reduce fraud to a minimum.

Bottom line, you do away with the 20 per cent concession and the revenue lost will far outweigh the reduced fraud as most people, like my mother, will not be able to import a car.

I am etc.,

CAM
