Careless paraphrase

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I WOULD like my name to be cleared as quickly as possible. My negative feelings about hanging appeared in yesterday's VOX POP, but what I said was summarised and rather carelessly paraphrased.

No educator worthy of the name would be guilty of saying: " ... and anybody that thinks about hanging should do the deed themselves."

Please remind the interviewer that (1) anybody is singular, which precludes the use of themselves and that (2) in referring to persons, one ought to use who instead of that.

I am, etc.,

HILARY GOODEN
