Cramped for space

THE EDITOR, Madam

I AM a grade three teacher. Since September 4th, my classroom has been re-located. My new classroom is a 20-foot. container, which has two windows at one side and another three windows on the other side with two doors leading directly into another classroom. The entrance to my classroom is the original opening of the container.

There are 48 students on roll. For the first week of September, the highest attendance was 42.

There are no fans, neither is there an air conditioning unit. Inside the classroom is extremely hot with the students and myself sweating profusely.

When this matter was brought to the attention of my superiors, I was told that I had nowhere else to go, but I'll soon be getting some fans.

Inside the classroom is so unbearable, that as soon as there is shade, the students are taken outside. If it is raining, they have to remain inside until dismissal.

On Thursday afternoon, September 7th, there was a thunderstorm and lightning strikes.

I am deeply concerned about the safety of my students and myself. Are my concerns unnecessary? I am open to suggestions.

I am, etc.,
