Feanny sweeps Pringle Cup

PHILIP FEANNY'S trophy-race dominance continued at Caymanas Park yesterday when the many-time champion trainer's MISSISSIPPI MEDIC led a Feanny sweep of the 1100-metre Pringle Cup.

The four-year-old dark bay colt, ridden by Percy Williams, scored an easy 3 1/4 length win at even-money ahead of stable companions MATANAH and WYLE COYOTE, who was sent off as the 4-5 favourite in the five-horse field.

Sent down in class to Starter Handicap II and Overnight Allowance level by Feanny, MISSISSIPPI MEDIC's job was made easier by the late scratch of ante-post favourite MISS GOTHAM CITY, who had ventured up in class bidding for her third straight win.

After breaking smartly from the gate, MISSISSIPPI MEDIC chased MATANAH at close range before going through at the half-mile. However, WYLE COYOTE made a sweeping move from his outside draw to join his stablemate three furlongs out.

WYLE COYOTE turned for home a marginal leader but was reeled in by

MISSISSIPPI MEDIC faster than you could spell M-I-S-S-I-S-S-I-P-P-I. Pushed out by Williams, MISSISSIPPI MEDIC won comfortably ahead of MATANAH, running on to blow past WYLE COYOTE a half-furlong out.

The win pushed Feanny even further ahead of champion Wayne DaCosta in the trainers' standings. With more than $22,000,000 in stakes, even if he doesn't start another runner for the remainder of the year, Feanny, whose two-year-old filly MY GIRL romped home in the 1100-metre first race, is all set to chalk up his 11th trainers' title at Caymanas Park.

Leading jockey Andrew Ramgeet reminded title-chasing Shane Ellis he's still champion by booting home a double - CAPTAIN JACQUES at 6-1 in the 1300-metre eighth race and JUST DO IT at 4-1 in the 10th. Ellis, however, did not go home empty-handed, scoring a good win with Errol Waugh's GAILY DECORATED in the 1000-metre straight ninth race. The American mare won by half-length from OWEN TAYLOR, who had a head to spare over Feanny's DR. R S F, the 3-5 favourite.

Ramgeet's double carried him to 84 wins, eight clear of Ellis.

Wednesday's Overnight programme has nine races scheduled. The 1820-metre Royal Dad Trophy event pits DaCosta's three-year-old classic-placed RESTLESS WARRIOR against five opponents - STRAIGHTTOTHEHEART, BRINGDIMONEYCOME, DESPERADO, SPEED FREAK and WINNING CHOICE.
