WESTERN BUREAU:
DESPITE THE National Water Commission's (NWC) claim that it corrected a fault to its sewage plant in Cornwall Courts Housing Scheme near Green Pond in St. James, residents are still complaining about a foul stench which they say is becoming unbearable.
"That problem was fixed over a week ago," Charles Buchanan, NWC Community Relations officer said. He noted that his Montego Bay office got some calls about the foul odour and investigations revealed that a mechanical problem was the source of the problem.
The main victim of the odour is the Farm All-Age and Junior High School in Green Pond.
The principal, Mr. Sam Reid, was out of office but a member of the administrative staff confirmed that the school community was being affected by the stench.
"Last week it was very high because I was in the office and the smell came through the closed doors," she said. "The odour comes over when the wind is high, it is really bad at times."
Mr. Buchanan told The Gleaner yesterday that he has had no new complaints for the past two weeks. He also mentioned in the interview that he would be sending a team to check out the facility.
Members of the Defenders Football Club who use a playing field nearby the plant had to abort their games due to the odour. 'The yout' dem caan even get fi play nuh ball because di place stink," footballer Peter Hall commented. "Green Pond never so stink before dem build the housing scheme," he added.
