St. Mary stalwarts honoured

PORT MARIA, St. Mary:

TWELVE STALWARTS of St. Mary who served in the field of community service, education, the public sector and agriculture were honoured on National Heroes Day, Monday, October 16 at a ceremony in Claude Stuart Park, Port Maria.

Three teachers, Mrs. Joyce Thompson, Ms. Claudette Duncan and Miss Barbara Simmonds, were lauded for giving years of service in the classrooms and for community service. Mrs. Gwendolyn Allen was honoured for her role in the field of agriculture while the other eight recipients received awards for community and public service.

Senior Justice of the Peace, Vincent Mason, pointed to the trying times now facing the country and urged the audience to stand up and fight to bring back dignity and loyalty to the society.

"The Heroes resisted power and fought for freedom," he said.
