THE EDITOR, Madam:
WHEN I moved to live in Greater Portmore I was under the misapprehension that I was living in a residential area. However, it has turned out to be a vast farmland, where cows reign supreme, followed by goats, a few pigs and the occasional horses. (Oh, and there's no shortage of dogs).
Cows and goats not only create a threat to motor vehicle, life and limb, but they also offer endless amounts of (unwanted) manure, not only on lawns but also in the road, on sidewalks, and open areas. One gets a great deal of exercise side-stepping these mounds of waste. One cannot be in too much of a hurry to go anywhere because these cows stand up in the road and one has to wait patiently for them to move. Added to that they come right up to the doorstep to have meals. Because some of us are just eking out a living, we cannot afford a fence to keep these menaces out. And of course, there are the flies that dutifully follow these animals around.
The occasional horse is not to be outdone as one night I got the fright of my life, thinking someone was trying to break in. It was actually a horse in the washing area having a drink, while his mate was having a late-night snack nearby.
Will the authorities ever stop talking and actually do something about this menace? Will the day come when lawfulness prevails instead of lawlessness?
At this rate animals will soon be moving in with us. Are our voices crying in the wind? We need help.
I am etc.,
