Letter of the Day - The media at work

THE EDITOR, Madam

I DO not understand who is leading the country at the moment. Maybe it is because I am in another country and getting the daily dose of Jamaica via the Internet. Every day it's another outrageous headline of scandal, murder and people dodging responsibility.

It seems like the only sector of our country that is functioning efficiently and working for the public good is the media houses. It is the headlines which are pushing this reactive government to act, for example, the whole wire-tapping issue is only on the agenda because of the exposure in The Sunday Gleaner.

The media has truly become the eyes and ears of the people.

The ironic part of this is that the people in power wanted to control the media via legislation tabled in Parliament, yet it was the freedom of the press which made them aware that they themselves were having their rights violated with illegal wiretaps.

I believe this should be enough evidence as to why Jamaica should not stifle the media because the freedom of the press is essential to the freedom of all Jamaicans, both the little man and the movers and shakers.

I am etc,
