Conversations are not recorded

THE EDITOR, Madam:

I WRITE with reference to the October 20th instalment of your regular feature, Tech Talk, by Clifton Segree. The article claims that every call coming in and going out of Jamaica is recorded.

I wish to state categorically, that if by recorded your columnist meant that conversations are recorded, then, that is absolutely not true.

What telephone companies involved in the transmittal and receipt of international telephone calls routinely record are the essentials required for accurate billing of customers and settlements between the companies i.e. time of day, duration and type of call direct-dialled or operator-assisted.

I hope this clarifies any misunderstanding the article may have caused.

I am etc.,
