Long-term plans for Portmore

THE EDITOR, Madam:

AS A concerned citizen of Greater Portmore, I write with reference to the growing escalation of the population within this area.

Constantly, additional dwellings are being built to house the growing demand. While this should be commended, I would like to bring to the attention of the relevant authorities, some major concerns.

1) What method is in place to resolve the present transportation system crisis that residents face? They now pay $60 or more for a ride to Kingston (one way). Parents are not able to provide their children with these exorbitant fares, hence a dramatic decrease in school attendance.

2) The lack of sufficient bus shelters. When it rains residents have to wait until it stops raining before venturing out.

3) Plans are to be started to expand Knutsford Boulevard which is faced with a relatively minor congestion problem as it only occurs at peak hours. What about an alternative route to and from Portmore? We face congestion 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. each day. Should a disaster such as flooding occur and residents need to be evacuated, what other route is in place?

Why isn't there long-term planning in place? Shouldn't these factors be taken into consideration when plans are being made?

Who is responsible for the planning? Who is responsible for approving these plans?

I am, etc.,

N. AUDIA DIXON
