Remembering two excellent Jamaicans

TWO DEATHS have grieved me terribly. Mr. Alfred Chen's tragic departure has made us all very sad. He was exemplary as a politician in that he mixed with PNP, JLP and No Party people. He never missed meetings of his party's executive - called the Standing Committee. He was willing always to help with his helicopter. He was an excellent spokesman on construction and engineering issuing statements of quality and strength. He had a most charming sense of humour, and oh how he loved his wife and family. No wonder all the parties have expressed sadness and sorrow. May his soul rest in peace.

Then on Thursday, October 19, eight days after, I was shocked to hear that Mrs. Evangeline McDowell had died suddenly! She was impressive as an executive officer at Priory and retired fairly recently, but kept running some regular important examinations for us at Priory. An excellent officer whose minutes were brilliant, and whose executive quality in following up decisions was impeccable.

Just recently she and Dr. McDowell who works and lives in Ocho Rios organised an outstanding launching of a book of poems by their daughter. That turned out to be the crowning exit of a wonderful Jamaican citizen. May her soul rest in peace.
