Heineken AJ serves off

Defending champion Jermaine Smith

JERMAINE Smith and Scott Willinsky will take time out from the ITF Futures circuit to battle for the Heineken All-Jamaica Championships men's title this week at the Liguanea Club, New Kingston.

Defending champion Smith and Willinsky loom as the class of the field and appear set to go head-to-head for the US$50,000 first prize and the national crown.

There will also be action in ladies' singles, men's doubles, ladies doubles, mixed doubles, men's singles (35 and over), ladies' singles (35 and over) and men's double (35 and over).

The ladies' champion will be able to stash $25,000 away in her purse while the men's ($12,000) and ladies' ($6,000) doubles winners will also be rewarded for their efforts.

Action starts today at 4:00 p.m. and continues through to the weekend when the semi-finals and final will be held mid-morning.

Meanwhile, Jan Hajek of the Czech Republic cruised to victory in the final of the ITF clay court Future tournament at Swept Away, Negril on Saturday.

Hajek dismissed Sweden's Johan Ortegren in a lopsided finale 6-1, 6-2. Ortegren found some measure of redemption in the doubles where he combined with compatriot Johan Kaveld to defeat Cuba's Lazaro Navaro and Sandor Martines 7-5, 6-2 in the final.
