Alcan's Brown wins Jago 10K

ALCAN'S Kenrick Brown ended Linton McKenzie's unbeaten run in the $200,000 Jamdammers Grand Prix Road Racing Series on Sunday when he won the Burger King/St.Jago 10K race in 32 minutes and 44 seconds.

After consecutive victories in the Feel Fit 5k (16:05) and the Run to the Beach 10k (33:32), McKenzie placed second in 33:10 - one minute slower than the 31:41 he clocked when placing second in the same race in April of this year, behind St. Vincent's Pamenos Ballantyne who won in a course record 31:02.

McKenzie was followed home by his Alcan teammates Winston Taylor (33:53) and Robert Watson, fourth in 34:08.

Conrad Bailey of Edwin Allen Comprehensive High was the first schoolboy finisher and fifth overall in 34:57, beating former national marathon champion Andrew Gutzmore (35:06) and Alcan's Gregory McKenzie, seventh in 35:07.

Defending Series champion, Omar Brooks continues to perform poorly - placing ninth in 35:19.

Another upset occurred in the women's category where Vere Technical's Meleshia Spencer, runner-up in the Series last year, was beaten by new kid on the block Tamika Thomas of Tacius Golding.

Spencer, winner of the Run to the Beach 10K, placed second in 40:53 behind Thomas' winning 40:32. Edwin Allen's Lorraine McKenzie (41:28) placed third ahead of teammate Jodian Richards (41:49), Christine Powell of Jamdammers (43:18), Nicola Maye (43.37) also of Edwin Allen, Jody Johnson of Holmwood Technical (43.46) and Beverly Morris of Edwin Allen (44.02) - making up the top eight.

Jill Vincent, the female defending Series champion from Jamdammers and who won the Feel Fit, failed to finish due to exhaustion.

Meanwhile, in the overall Series' points standings, McKenzie still leads the male section with 61 points over Taylor who is in second with 55 points.

Gregory McKenzie who participated in all three races - third in the Feel Fit (17:16), sixth in Run to the Beach (36:07) and seventh on Sunday in 35:07 - lies in third spot with 47 points. He is followed by Brown (40) and Watson (23).

Spencer leads among the females with 40 points ahead of Holmwood's Johnson (31). Vincent and Thomas have 21 points each to share third position.

Winners in each race are awarded 21 points, with second position getting 19 points and third 18 - with the other descending positions decreasing by one point.

Holmwood Technical and Edwin Allen Comprehensive emerged the champion male and female school teams respectively, while Alcan swept the club team category in both sexes.

The 10K started at the Ferry Police Station at 7:00 a.m. and ended at the Burger King outlet in Portmore.

Over 190 runners - 133 male and 57 female - participated in the race which is the third of five races in the Grand Prix Series. The fourth race will be the Hugo Chambers 10k which is set to begin on November 12.
