Cops should declare assets Knight

MINISTER OF National Security and Justice K.D. Knight yesterday proposed that senior police officers be required to declare their assets.

The proposal was made during a meeting with members of the Police Officers Association (POA) and came against the background of on-going investigations into allegations that senior police officers were involved in drug trafficking.

Yesterday's discussions centred on whether the declaration of assets should be done voluntarily or should be required by law.

However, according to chairman of the association, Senior Supt. Charles Simpson, the executive of the POA opted to await the passage of legislation.

"Voluntary compliance could not be enforced. It would have no legal effect and there would be no sanction," he said last night. He denied radio reports that officers vigorously objected to the proposal.
