Customs to get more power

A BILL seeking to amend the Customs Act to increase the jurisdiction of the Commissioner of Customs over undelivered goods was tabled by Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Omar Davies, in Parliament on Tuesday.

The Bill seeks to amend the Act to: Increase the jurisdiction of the customs officer over undelivered goods outside the jurisdiction of the master or owner of the vessel carrying the goods, by creating an offence for interfering with these goods; increase the fines for some existing offences; and, make provision for the reduction of the period of warehousing from two to one year.

The opportunity will also be taken to amend the Customs Regulations 1955, to provide for the production of a Tax Compliance Certificate to the proper officer.
