Mega MoBay expansion

MONTEGO BAY will soon get its own Mega Mart shopping club.

The Government said it has approved the $26.6M sale of some 16 acres of land in the Catherine Hall area of Montego Bay to a group of investors led by Gassan Azan of Bashco Trading Company Limited, for the purpose of commercial development.

Mr. Azan told Wednesday Business that the area would be developed to incorporate a "Mega-Mart" super-store the same size as the one Bashco now operates in Portmore, an office-park-type section with information technology facilities, plus other service ventures, all in a 350,000 square foot shopping centre-concept development.

Information Minister Maxine-

Henry Wilson told journalists on Monday that government had initially envisaged housing development for the land in question, but that this idea had been shelved in favour of sale for commercial enterprise because of the current real estate climate.

Pending matters like the necessary approvals and the customary red tape accompanying such projects, Mr. Azan said he hoped to have construction underway by early 2001.
