Air J's culinary breakthrough

THE EDITOR, Madam:

WHILE WE'RE on the subject of the "liberation" of ackee into the US market (Food section of Oct. 26, 2000), let me congratulate Air Jamaica on their culinary breakthrough.

In April I ordered vegetarian meals on a US to Jamaica and back flight. Breakfast going in included a healthy 'rollup' stuffed with corn and vegetables, a slice of turn cornmeal and fruits. Dinner on the return trip exceed my expectations. There before me were delicately spiced slices of tofu.

While passengers on other carriers have resigned themselves to taking on their meals, Air Jamaica is offering choices to appeal to a wider section of the market. I can remember refusing a plate of "rabbit food" (sliced cabbage and tomatoes) that passed for a vegetarian entrée. I cannot count the times I have had to make-do with my carry-on staple of fruits because the vegetarian meal tasted insipid or somebody "forgot" my vegetarian order made days in advance of the flight. Compliments to the chef.

I am etc,

JEAN ASHER
