Brown takes Chambers 10K

McKenzie

KENRICK BROWN ran a well judged race to defeat veteran Linton McKenzie in yesterday's Hugo Chambers Memorial 10K at Jamaica College.

The course which stretched from Mona Road, along Papine Road and back to Old Hope Road saw Brown clocking 32 minutes and nine seconds to grab the top spot ahead of McKenzie who did 32:20.

However McKenzie, by virtue of the eight points gained yesterday for second, moved to 36 points to remain on top of the Jamdammers grand prix standings and is on the verge of taking the overall title with only one event to be contested.

Yesterday's winner Brown, now have 28 points and must win the final 5K race at the National Stadium on November 17 to stand a chance of upstaging Mckenzie.

Brown was pleased with his performance after the gruelling run.

"It was a pretty good race," said Brown."I just relaxed behind McKenzie for most of the race, waited until he started to get tired and then made my move.".

The 31-year-old athlete who has been running for the past four years but has been hampered by knee injuries, is having his best season and hopes to end it with a great performance in the final meet of the grand prix later this month.

"I have not been bothered this season with injuries this season and I am looking forward to take advantage of my good health and do well in the final race to give myself a chance to win the grand prix."

McKenzie, with two wins and two second-placed finishes in the grand prix paid tribute to Brown.

"He is young... he has just started to run but he did well and I am happy for him," said McKenzie.

"It was a comfortable distance and I tried staying with Brown as both of us started at the back of the field. But he found a bit more during the later stages of the race," said the 40-year-old McKenzie.

Winston Taylor of Alcan finished third while Delroy Hayden was fourth. Former St. Jago High school student Andrew Kidd, finished fifth.

Melisha Spencer won the female category ahead of Artherine Smith and Melicia Pilache.
