Cornwall hit top form

CORNWALL College produced a big second-half performance to blank Dinthill Technical 3-0 in the daCosta Cup quarter-final game at the Ewarton playfield yesterday.

Goals by Rayon Clarke (67th), substitute Ceyon Shaw (81st) and Maurice Parkins (90th) gave the Montego Bay team the comfortable win.

With the win following an earlier 1-1 draw with Clarendon College, Cornwall move to four points and with only one game to go, are well placed to advance to the semi-finals from group B.

However, following yesterday's loss, their second consecutive, Dintill are out of contention for a place in the last four.

"I knew that it would take a while for us to settle and get the adrenalin flowing after the long travel and therefore a goalless first half for us was very good," said Dr Dean Weatherly, coach of Cornwall College.

"In the second half, we began to put the ball down, play it around and take the game to Dintill and we got the rewards with three goals. We have worked hard all season and I believe we are getting the results we deserve," added Weatherly.

Frank Brown, coach of Dintill, blamed his team's lacklustre midfield perfromance in the second half for the defeat.

"Our midfield performance in the second half was very bad. The players just did not work hard enough," said Brown. "Cornwall came out and took the battle to us and that cost us the game."

It was Dintill which charge of proceedings early in the second half but a neat counter attack by Cornwall created the first goal.

A long ball from the Cornwall defence found Clarke to the right of Dintill's 18 yard box for the lanky player to dribble forward and hit a powerful grounder past Craig Bennetter.

Nine minutes before the end of regulation time, Cornwall added their second courtesy of a thunderous freekick from Shaw.

Clarke was fouled some 30 yards by hard-tackling Dintill defenders and the resulting kick was struck powerfully into left hand corner of the goal.

On the stroke of full time, Cornwall completed the rout when a well directed cross from Garnet Chisholm on the right found the head of Parkins inside the six yard box, for him to nod past Bennetter.
